Tim Holtz - Distress Seasonal Crayons

Hello Lovelies! We got new colors of Distress Crayons recently for Halloween and Holiday crafting. I was even more excited to see that they have a subtle sheen to them which I think will make them even more special at this festive time of year!

Today's card duo focuses on experimenting with bringing together the Crayons with the textures of embossing folders.

So now we have a gorgeous NEW Limited Edition rainbow of Pearlescent Distress Colors, can you guess which is my favorite? You might be surprised!

Also, Ranger Ink sent over the latest trio of Distress Crayons from Tim's "standard" Distress Color line. (THANK YOU RANGER!!!)

Distress Crayons are quite versatile and frankly at first I wanted to try so many different techniques with them that it was getting overwhelming...ever heard of analysis paralysis? It's a specialty of mine!

So I took a step back and ultimately decided to focus on pairing the crayons with embossing folders. As usual I've highlighted key supplies for each project in the relevant section and included a full supply list at the end of this post.

Note that the Poinsettia folder that I used is the MINI version. It is small and mighty!!!

"TK U" CARD - Distress Crayons Applied to Embossed Cardstock

Card Base: 4 1/4" x 5 1/2"

Embossed Layer: 3 3/4" x 5"

Featuring:

  • Tim Holtz Ranger Distress Crayons Mica I WANT IT ALL Bundle

  • Tim Holtz Sizzix PERSPECTIVE MOTH Thinlits Dies

  • Tim Holtz Idea-ology MINI MARQUEE LETTERS

  • Tim Holtz Idea-ology 8 x 8 Papers COPPER and ROSE GOLD

  • Tim Holtz Idea-ology 8 x 8 Paper Stash METALLIC KRAFT STOCK

  • Tim Holtz Sizzix ALPHANUMERIC STRETCH UPPER Thinlits Dies

  • Tim Holtz Sizzix FOLIAGE Texture Fades Embossing Folder

  • Tim Holtz Sizzix MINI POINSETTIA 3D Texture Fades Embossing Folder

  • Tim Holtz Sizzix ARCHED Multi-Level Texture Fades Embossing Folder

Key Steps

  • After embossing two A2-sized pieces of the White Heavystock with the Foliage Folder, select one and "color" in the leaves in an array of Fall tones

  • Use your five-fingered blending tool to blend in the colors. Alternate your fingers so that you don't contaminate the colors. Tip: Keep a wet-wipe nearby to moisten your fingertips which will help with blending the colors.

  • Layer and embellish with Marquee Letters and alphabet diecuts

I love how the pigment gets into the grooves created by the embossing folder and further defines the image:

A little metallic Cardstock from the Copper Paper Stash kept the Fall vibes going for this card!

The embossed layer and the Marquee Letter is popped up with foam.

Easy and fun! My favorite combo!

BE MERRY CARD - Distress Crayons Applied to Cardstock Treated with Collage Medium, Then Embossed Before Color is "Lifted" from the Raised Embossing

Card Base: 4 1/4" x 5 1/2"

Embossed Layer: 3 3/4" x 5"

Featuring:

  • Tim Holtz Ranger Distress Crayons Mica I WANT IT ALL Bundle - Frosted Juniper, Snow Flurries, Holly Branch, Bubbling Cauldron

  • Tim Holt Ranger Distress Crayons - Prize Ribbon, Salvaged Patina

  • Tim Holtz Sizzix MERRY & BRIGHT Thinlits Dies

  • Tim Holtz Idea-ology MINI MARQUEE LETTERS

  • Tim Holtz Idea-ology 8 x 8 Paper Stash METALLIC KRAFT STOCK

  • Tim Holtz Distress Collage Medium MATTE

  • Tim Holtz Sizzix MINI POINSETTIA 3D Texture Fades Embossing Folder

  • Tim Holtz Sizzix ARCHED Multi-Level Texture Fades Embossing Folder

Key Steps

  • Apply Collage Medium to the Distress Heavystock and let dry

  • Once dry, apply bands of color using the Distress Crayons.

  • Use your five-fingered blending tool to smooth out those bands of color horizontally. Initially, I used Holly Branch in the 2nd to last "band" from the bottom and found it a bit bright and went in after and layered some Bubbling Cauldron on top of it.

  • Again, alternate your fingers so that you don't contaminate the colors.

  • As you move from one color to another wipe the excess color of your fingers onto the raised portion of the arched embossing folder in coordinating bands

  • Once you are done smoothing the color and transferring to the folder, emboss another piece of Heavystock with the Arched folder which will press traces of the color you transferred into the grooves of the design

  • Emboss the Crayon-colored paper using the Mini Poinsettia Folder

  • Use a moist cotton swab (Q-tip) to lift color from the raised Poinsettia pattern

  • Trim to the size of the folder when complete

  • Layer and embellish with Marquee Letters and the "Merry & Bright" Diecut

Teeny pieces of strategically placed foam keep the diecuts afloat! :-)

Crayons subtly highlighting the grooves.

I think I will call this the "Bleached Crayon Effect"... LOL

A few Metallic Droplets of course fo finish!

Lovelies, I hope that you too will fall in love with this pair. I usually plan and sketch my cards, but this time, everything here happened organically and based on feeling my way through what the Crayons wanted to do and somehow this makes them extra special to me.

Thank you so much for visiting! Hope to see you soon!
