Tim Holtz Watercolor Pencil Backgrounds



Hello Lovelies! You may have seen my previous post where I used my new Tim Holtz Watercolor Pencil Sets for coloring a stamped image, but today we will make backgrounds!


Today, we will explore 3 simple Background techniques, with these versatile pencils:

1) Single Color Gradient

2) Two-color Blended

3) Paint-splatter

3) Pencil Shavings

You just need a coupler more things to make your backgrounds, some of which you may already have:

1. SINGLE COLOR GRADIENT BACKGROUND



CARD PALETTE

Distress Watercolor Pencil Colors:

Picked Raspberry (or ANY color you like!)



QUICK! BACKGROUND WALKTHROUGH
  1. Secure the Watercolor Cardstock to your crafting surface with Frog Tape

  2. Use the Watercolor Pencil to color in the top 1/3rd of the cardstock

  3. Spray the cardstock 3-5 times with water using the Distress Sprayer

  4. Starting at the top of the cardstock use a flat paintbrush to "melt" pigment by sweeping the brush back and forth, top to bottom across the cardstock

  5. Remove tape and set aside to dry





 


2. TWO COLOR BLENDED BACKGROUND



CARD PALETTE

Distress Watercolor Pencil Colors:

  • Mustard Seed

  • Candy Apple



QUICK! BACKGROUND WALKTHROUGH
  1. Secure the Watercolor Cardstock to your crafting surface with Frog Tape

  2. Use the Watercolor Pencils to color in the each half of the cardstock

  3. Spray the cardstock 3 or more times with water using the Distress Sprayer

  4. Starting at the top of the cardstock use a flat paintbrush to "melt" pigment by sweeping the brush back and forth, top to bottom across the cardstock

  5. Remove tape and set aside to dry



 


3. PAINT SPLATTER BACKGROUND



CARD PALETTE

Distress Watercolor Pencil Colors:

  • Seedless Preserves

  • Wilted Violet

  • Villainous Violet

  • Antique Linen



QUICK! BACKGROUND WALKTHROUGH
  1. Secure the Watercolor Cardstock to your crafting surface with Frog Tape

  2. Wet a small round paintbrush with water and use that to wet the tip of the

  3. Use the same paintbrush to flick speck of wet pigment off of the tip of the pencil onto the cardstock

  4. Use the paintbrush tip to add larger spots of color randomly across the cardstock to create a terrazzo inspired look

  5. Remove tape and set aside to dry




 

4. PENCIL SHAVINGS BACKGROUNDS



CARD PALETTE

Distress Watercolor Pencil Colors:

  • Kitsch Flamingo

  • Picked Raspberry

  • Candied Apple

  • Mustard Seed

  • Twisted Citron

  • Peacock Feathers

  • Salty Ocean


QUICK! BACKGROUND WALKTHROUGH
  1. Collect the shavings needed

  2. Secure the Watercolor Cardstock to your crafting surface with Frog Tape

  3. Generously wet the cardstock with 5+ sprays of water

  4. Sprinkle the paper randomly with each color of the shavings, one color at a time

  5. Take another piece of Watercolor cardstock and press onto the first piece to soak up excess pigment and water, creating 2 backgrounds at once

  6. Remove tape and set aside to dry
