I usually live on the bright and bold end of the color spectrum, but neutrals are gorgeous and I want to start experimenting with them more.
I can't always promise that my experiments will be successful, but I think that this is all part of growing and learning. I hope you will join me for this journey and share feedback about how you use neutrals.
Both of my cards celebrate parents and are perfect for Mother's Day and Father's Day, but could also be used for birthdays or other celebrations.
A full supply list is at the bottom of this post, but I'd like to highlight several Tim Holtz's dies by Sizzix that are the focal point of the cards:
Tim Holtz Sizzix Framelits Stacked Tiles Ovals Die Set
Tim Holtz Sizzix Crochet Thinlits Dies
Tim Holtz Sizzix Alphanumeric Shadow Upper Thinlits Die Sets
Tim Holtz Adorned Thinlits Dies
The ovals are from Tim's Sizzix Chapter 2 release and the others are from prior releases. I LOVE that Simon Says Stamp carries Tim's full line, the new stuff as well as the older catalog!!!
As far as the neutral cardstock, I raided my stash for several shades of grey for the "Mom" card and a two browns and a brick red for the "Dad" card. I just received my order of Simon Says Cardstock so I will recommend a few selections for you to consider. There is no mystery to these cards, so I won't give you a play-by-play but will share a few pointers on each.
Love You Mom
This card is all about the Crochet diecuts! Select the largest die and cut it six times:
4 different grey cardstock; 1 black and 1 white cardstock.
Adhere the top edge of each Crochet strip in succession to a white card base, tucking each strip slightly beneath the prior strip until all 6 strips are layered onto the card base.
Finish with the Shadow Alpha Upper letters, white flourishes (one stacked 3 diecuts high) and a "Love You" metallic sticker snippet.
Let's Celebrate You Dad
If the Mom card was all about the Crochet strips, the Ovals are the star of the Dad card. The Ovals set comes with 5 sizes of oval diecuts, select the largest, the medium and the smallest dies.
Choose two "brown" colors and one brick red/orange color cardstock and cut out a set of ovals in different sizes of the browns and 4 small ovals in the brick red cardstock.
Layer your ovals as shown below, think of a peacock feather! Again, finish with the Shadow Alpha Upper letters in a light and a dark grey for contrast and a metallic sticker snippet.
The card is finished with the Shadow Upper letters and "Let's Celebrate" and "You" metallic sticker snippets.
Both of these cards took me way out of my comfort zone, but I am a little more comfortable with neutrals and excited to try more experiments with color!
